Halloween is celebrated in many countries on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It began as a pagan festival among the Celts of Britain and Ireland called Samhain.
Scholars believe that Samhain was a time when people worshipped the dead, thought about death and prepared for the winter season. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular celebration enjoyed by people of all ages. Today, it is most commonly associated with costumes, trick-or-treating, and jack-o’-lanterns.
From ancient times to the present, people have been dressing up in costumes for Halloween celebrations.
