When Titanic was released in 1997, everyone was captivated by the love story between Jack and Rose.

A Plain Gravestone in Nova Scotia
For years, people believed Jack Dawson was real. There was even a headstone in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with the name “J. Dawson.” on it.
The problem is that there must be records of Jack Dawson sailing on the Titanic.
In Titanic, Jack tells Rose that he’s from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, but there are no records of anyone matching his description in the documents.
Furthermore, while there were several passengers with Wisconsin ties on the Titanic, none of them were Jack Dawson.
Still, many of the film’s die-hard fans believed that Jack was real, so they traveled to Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Nova Scotia, where officials laid many Titanic victims to rest.
The assumption that J. Dawson was Jack is not as big a stretch as many might assume.
In fact, after the release of the movie, Cameron discovered that J. Dawson was Joseph Dawson, a man who shoveled coal into the Titanic’s boilers.
So, despite the loose connection, it was doubtful that he won his ticket last minute while gambling and was stationed in third class, as Jack claimed in the movie.
Although the headstone in Halifax caused many people to believe that Jack was real, there is no evidence to support this theory.
Furthermore, even if Jack was based on someone, there is no way to know who that person was.
Cameron has said in interviews that Rose and Jack are fictional characters, and there is no evidence to suggest otherwise.
Historical Characters Were Still in The Story
As we mentioned, Titanic is full of historical characters, some of whom movie buffs will be familiar with as they are also characters in the movie.
Edward John Smith
For example, Titanic’s real-life captain was Edward John Smith. He went down with the ship when it sank and is one of the Titanic’s most well-known victims.
In the movie, the character of Captain Smith is played by Bernard Hill and is shown giving the order to “abandon ship.”
Bruce Ismay
Another historical figure in the film is Bruce Ismay, played by Jonathan Hyde.
Ismay was the chairman and managing director of the White Star Line.
According to historical accounts, it was customary for him to accompany the ships on their maiden voyages.
He was also on board when the boat sank and was vilified in the press for his cowardice.
In the movie, Ismay is shown escaping the ship on a lifeboat.
However, due to the regulations, he commissioned the Titanic and its sister ships reducing the lifeboats to minimum capacity.
This decision weighed heavily on Ismay’s mind as he helped get many women and children onto the lifeboats.
Only after everyone he could find was safely onboard a lifeboat did he escape himself.
Unfortunately, once the rescue ship arrived back in New York, public outrage over the Titanic disaster was high, and the press demonized Ismay.
Despite this, he remained chairman of the White Star Line, donating to an endowment for widows affected by the disaster and helping pay out many insurance claims to victims.
Ismay stepped down as chairman and continued his philanthropic work until he passed away in 1936, but it never repaired his public image.
Margaret Brown
Another real-life character that Jack and Rose met was Margaret Brown, played by Kathy Bates.
Brown was nicknamed “Molly” or “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” because she survived the disaster and was a tremendous help to those around her.
Once the Carpathia rescued everyone from the Titanic, Margaret coordinated with other first-class passengers to help lower-class survivors.
There are even true accounts where she tried to convince those on her lifeboat to go back for survivors.
Furthermore, after the shipwreck, she created and chaired a committee for survivors of the incident and helped to arrange burials, pay for funerals, and provide long-term care for those affected.
The movie depicts her as a tough woman who is not afraid to stand up, but despite her role and status, she was not allowed to testify in the United States and British hearings because she was a woman.
Titanic is one of the few films that tell part of her story, and she remains an important figure in Titanic history.
Despite The Presence of Fiction, The Story Was Memorable
While Titanic may not be one hundred percent accurate, it is a story that has captured the hearts of people around the world.
